World Metrology Day is observed on May 20th and commemorates the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875 by representatives from seventeen nations. The convention aimed to establish ‘worldwide uniformity of measurement.’
The theme this year is “Metrology in the Digital Era.” International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML) and the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) chose this theme because digital technology is revolutionizing our community and is one of the most exciting trends today. This statement could not be more valid!
Digital Technology has allowed us to change the way we live. Without it, our world would have come to a screeching halt during the COVID-19 pandemic. As our reliance on technology increases, so has the importance of ensuring accuracy and precision within our measurements. Advances in technology are reliant on our ability to provide meaningful and correct measurement data, and metrology is the science that ensures we can achieve that in our measurement systems. Metrology ensures that you pay the right amount for charging your electric vehicle, planes stay in the sky, and your GPS gets you where you need to go.
A2LA is proud to be a part of the mission to promote and improve the field of metrology. We participate by accrediting calibration laboratories to the requirements of ISO/IEC 17025. Accreditation in our Calibration Program ensures a quality assessment with technical experts who have experience in the field of measurement being assessed, resulting in greater customer confidence in the measurement results of the end-user.
