By Ashly Carter, A2LA Program Manager
The 2017 NCSL International Workshop & Symposium was held August 13 – 17, 2017 in Oxon Hill, MD (Washington DC Area). The theme this year was “Precision and Performance with Measurement Science.” A2LA supported the event as a Gold sponsor. This year there were two opening keynote speakers, Dr. Alan Steele, Chief Metrologist at NRC Canada and Mr. Michael Garvey, President and CEO of M-7 Technologies. Each spoke about Metrology and its impacts in a research technology organization and in an advanced manufacturing organization. The closing keynote speaker, Captain Craig Bomben, is the Vice President of Flight Operations, Chief Test Pilot for Boeing Test and Evaluation, Engineering, Operations and Technology. His keynote focused on the importance of measurements in the aerospace industry.
The hot topic of many discussions during the symposium was the upcoming release of the revised ISO/IEC 17025 standard and A2LA’s own Trace McInturff (Senior Director, Accreditation Services) served as one of the industry experts on the ISO/IEC 17025:2017 Round Table Discussion. The industry seems eager to adopt the changes, and many organizations have transition plans already in place. A2LA is offering many training courses to help laboratories prepare. Visit A2LA.org/events for the latest schedule updates as we add dates and locations.
A2LA staff conducted a well-received tutorial on “Understanding ISO/IEC 17025 and Most Common Deficiencies” instructed by Tim Osborne (Senior Director of Training Services). In attendance from A2LA were Lonnie Spires (President & CEO), Tim Osborne (NCSLI Operations VP), Rob Knake (Accreditation Manager, Calibration and NCSLI VP of NCSLI Measurement Requirements and Analysis (130)), Ashly Carter (Program Manager, Reference Material Producers and Chair of Working Group 2 of NCSLI Calibration System Resources Committee (171)), Katy Lyons (Business Development Specialist), Nick Slawson (Accreditation Officer II) and Kevin Schoettker (Accreditation Officer).
We were pleased to see many A2LA-accredited organizations exhibiting and in attendance this year. Thank you to all of those who stopped by A2LA’s booth!
